Playtime Science
- Playology dog toys are made from non-toxic, dog-safe materials. All toys are independently tested for safety.
- Playology's rubber toys, including the Squeaky Chew Ball, Squeaky Chew Stick, Dual Layer Bone, and Dual Layer Ring, are made from heavy-duty rubber designed for everyday chewers.
- Playology's moisture-wicking fabric toys, including the Dri-Tech Rope and Dri-Tech Ring, are made from specialized moisture-wicking fibers that stay dry and clean from slobber during play.
- Playology's tough plush toys, including the Squeaky Bone, Squeaky Ball, Crinkle Disk, and Crinkle Ring, are made from diamond-quilted, layered corduroy fabric designed for added durability and texture.
Playology dog toys are made with 100% all natural scents derived from natural protein, with no artificial flavorings, chemical sprays, or synthetic additives. The scent is encapsulated directly into each toy's materials and engineered to release continuously as dogs chew.
- In rubber toys, including the Squeaky Chew Ball, Squeaky Chew Stick, Dual Layer Bone, and Dual Layer Ring, the all-natural scent is infused into the rubber itself, releasing from microscopic pockets in the material the more a dog chews.
- In rope toys, the scent is integrated directly into the fabric fibers, releasing a fresh burst of protein aroma with each bite.
- In plush toys, the scent is embedded into an internal mesh layer, keeping the toy engaging over time without relying on surface sprays or chemical treatments.
Playology's rubber toys are made from all-natural rubber and can be recycled through specialized rubber recycling programs. Standard curbside recycling programs do not accept pet toys, but dedicated rubber recycling facilities handle this type of material.
For eco-friendly alternatives, Playology's sister brand Grrreen® offers dog and cat toys made from recycled plastic bottles. Grrreen can be accessed through the brand navigation menu in the top left corner of playologypets.com or purchased on Amazon.com or Chewy.com.
Interactive play is play that involves engagement between a dog and a human, another dog, or another animal. It typically involves a toy and benefits both a dog's physical activity and mental stimulation.
Most Playology dog toys are designed to support interactive play in different ways. The Squeaky Chew Ball and Fetch Stick are well suited for fetch. The Dri-Tech Rope and Barrel Tug are ideal for tug of war between two dogs or between a dog and its owner. Every Playology toy can facilitate interactive play depending on how the dog and owner choose to use it.
Instinctive play is a style of play that encourages cats to express natural hunting behaviors, including stalking, chasing, pouncing, and capturing prey. Even domesticated cats retain these instincts from their wild ancestors, and engaging them throughout a cat's life supports physical health and mental stimulation.
Playology cat toys are designed to support instinctive play through features such as dangling feathers, crinkly textures, lifelike movements, and interactive elements that trigger stalking, chasing, pouncing, and batting behaviors.
Research shows that environmental enrichment through play improves quality of life in domestic cats, particularly for indoor cats with limited natural stimulation. By engaging a cat's predatory instincts, instinctive play provides the exercise and mental engagement that support overall well-being.
Playology operates a global supply chain, with design, scent development, and headquarters based in the United States.
Playology's scents are 100% natural and developed in the USA. The rubber used in Playology toys is sourced from Singapore, selected for its quality. Playology toys are made in various countries in factories that are regularly audited for social compliance by an independent, internationally recognized auditing firm, with Playology employees also present on-site to conduct direct oversight.
Playology was founded in 2017 as the first brand launched under parent company Logical Brands, a Nashville-based company founded by husband and wife team Adam and Lendy Beatty. Logical Brands was built around a mission to improve the lives of pets and their parents through meaningful, transformative innovation. Adam and Lendy's background in product design began in 2002 working with major theme parks including Disney and Universal Studios, before expanding into pet products in 2005. Since then they have designed and developed private label products for major retailers. Other brands under the Logical Brands umbrella include Grrreen™, Hound2O™, and Moose & Pig®.

Playology partners with three major veterinary and materials science universities to test product performance and safety. Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine, and Clemson School of Materials Science all work with Playology to ensure toys perform as intended and meet the brand's quality standards.
Dogs play and stay engaged with Playology toys for 7 times longer compared to unscented dog toys. A 2020 study conducted by Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine found that dogs are significantly more attracted to scent-activated toys, resulting in 7 times more engagement compared to unscented alternatives. Increased playtime supports mental stimulation and physical activity in dogs. Playology toys are designed around the unique scent receptors dogs use to recognize and seek out familiar smells. When a dog encounters a toy infused with a scent it enjoys, such as the beef or chicken-scented Dual Layer Bone, it activates a natural instinct that keeps the dog focused and engaged during play.
Dog Toys
No dog toy is completely indestructible, but Playology's Dual Layer Toys are specifically engineered to withstand more active chewing, including from large and powerful breeds. Any toy with “Dual Layer” in the name is suitable for heavy chewers.
- Within the Dual Layer range, Playology sells three toys that stand out for enhanced durability. The Dual Layer Bone, Dual Layer Ring, and Dual Layer Ball are all built with dual-layer rubber construction for maximum resistance to heavy chewing.
Playology toy sizes are based on dog weight. Small toys are recommended for dogs 25 pounds and under, medium toys for dogs between 25 and 50 pounds, and jumbo toys for dogs over 50 pounds.
For the best experience, check the weight recommendations listed on each individual product page, as weights can vary slightly by toy type. Choosing the correct size ensures a safe and more engaging play experience.
Playology dog toys are 100% non-toxic, safety-tested, and suitable for dogs of all life stages, from puppies to seniors.
- Playology's Young & Active line is specifically designed to soothe sore gums, support healthy chewing habits, and accommodate developing jaws. For senior dogs or dogs with dental issues, the Playology Senior line features toys engineered to give dogs the same chewing satisfaction as regular toys, but with less stress in their teeth and gums, making them well-suited for older dogs with increased oral care needs.
Playology toys are considered safe for dogs with allergies. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tested the raw scent materials used in Playology toys and determined that no ingredients are present at levels sufficient to trigger an oral allergic reaction in dogs or humans.
For dogs with severe or specific allergies, consulting a veterinarian before introducing any new toy is recommended.
- If a dog shows no immediate interest in a Playology toy, bending, twisting, or flexing the toy before reintroducing it can help. This activates the embedded scent technology, releasing more natural smell and increasing the toy's appeal.
- Introducing the toy during active playtime and choosing a shape or play style that matches the dog's existing preferences, such as chewing, fetching, tugging, or cuddling, also improves engagement. Playology's scent-infused materials are designed to release more scent the more a dog interacts with the toy, so engagement often increases over time.
- If the dog remains uninterested after trying these steps, we offer a Happiness Guarantee. Playology Customer Support can be contacted directly at karen@playologypets.com and she’ll help make it right!
Cleaning method depends on the toy type, and no detergent is needed for either.
Rubber chew toys and rope toys are dishwasher safe. Place the toy on the top rack and run a gentle or air dry cycle. Plush toys are machine washable and can be dried on low heat or air only.
You should buy a new Playology dog toy if your current one has visible damage or your dog remains uninterested with their toy after a while.
The clearest sign a toy needs replacing is visible damage. If a toy is ripping or has been significantly chewed apart, it should be replaced immediately to prevent accidental ingestion of loose parts. When replacing a destroyed toy, buying the same scent is a good choice since the dog was clearly engaged with it.
If a dog has lost interest in a toy rather than destroyed it, replacement is not always necessary. Trying the engagement tips, such as bending the toy to release more embedded scent and introducing it during active playtime, first is recommended. If the dog remains uninterested, switching to a different model or scent is a better solution than replacing like for like.
Playology's scent technology is engineered specifically for a dog's nose, not a human's. Dogs have up to 10,000 times the scent sensitivity of humans, so the embedded scent is intentionally strong enough to engage dogs without being noticeably pungent to people.
If the toy’s scent is not meeting expectations, Playology's customer support team can be contacted at karen@playologypets.com.
Playology scented toys typically retain their scent for about one year, depending on use and care. Because the scent is embedded directly into the toy's materials rather than sprayed on the surface, it lasts significantly longer than coated pet toys.
To extend scent life, wash the toy with warm water and little to no detergent. If the scent becomes undetectable to a human, the toy is likely still engaging to the dog, as Playology's scents are engineered to be significantly stronger for dogs than for humans.
All Playology dog toys are water-safe and washable, making them suitable for dogs that enjoy swimming. However, not all toys float as floatation varies based on toy type. Some toys may produce minor color transfer when wet, which is normal and not a safety concern.
Toys particularly well suited for water play include the Fetch Stick and Squeaky Chew Stick. For dogs that spend significant time in water, Playology's sister brand Hound2O specializes in dog toys designed specifically for water play. Hound2O can be accessed through the brand navigation menu in the top left corner of playologypets.com or purchased on Amazon.com or Chewy.com.
Cat Toys
Playology cat toys are primarily made from high-quality rubber and polyester, with many toys also including feathers and ribbons to stimulate natural hunting and play instincts. All cat toys undergo thorough safety testing.
Some toys include additional materials based on their design. The Teeter Totter, Butterfly, and Wind-Up Lizard contain plastic components. The Spider Teaser is made with latex components. The Crab includes foam components, and the Inchworm Teaser is made from plush materials.
- Many Playology cat toys are infused with catnip. This is different from the way Playology dog toys are scented.
- Catnip is a naturally stimulating scent for cats that research shows can improve quality of life by providing environmental enrichment. It is particularly beneficial for indoor cats with limited outdoor stimulation and adult cats that need additional engagement and activity.
- Not all Playology cat toys are catnip-infused. Individual product pages confirm scent details for specific toys.
All Playology toys are thoroughly safety-tested before reaching consumers and are designed to be pet-safe as well as meeting the ASTM & CPSIA testing guidelines for children's toys. Safe use also depends on selecting the right toy for the pet and following recommended usage guidelines.
Choosing the correct toy size is important. Select a toy appropriate for the pet's size and chewing habits, and always choose a toy large enough that it cannot be swallowed. Playology's size guide provides weight-based recommendations for dogs.
During play, always supervise pets to prevent accidental swallowing of parts. Inspect toys regularly and replace any toy immediately if a part becomes damaged or loose. No toy is indestructible. Some color transfer may occur if a toy gets wet, which is normal and not a safety concern.
Playology toys are designed for pet use only and are not suitable for children.
The best Playology cat toy depends on a cat's natural play style and life stage.
- Cats that enjoy chasing and pouncing are best matched with interactive toys featuring moving parts, such as the Teeter Totter, Suction Cup Spring Bird, or Chirping Grasshoppers, which trigger visual tracking and stalking reflexes.
- Cats that prefer batting and high-energy jumping do well with teaser wands like the Spider Teaser or Jellyfish Teaser.
- Cats that enjoy kicking and cuddling are best suited to toys like the Centipede, which provides the right texture and size for bunny-kicking and wrestling.
- For kittens, Playology offers a dedicated Young & Active Collection scaled and safety-tested for smaller jaws and developing play habits.
Playology offers a Happiness Guarantee on its products. If a cat is not satisfied with a Playology toy or an issue arises with a purchase, Playology's customer support team can be contacted directly for assistance at karen@playologypets.com.
Customer feedback is used to improve products, and Playology will work to find a solution for every pet and pet owner who has had a less than satisfactory experience.
Playology dog toys are safe for cats. Because most Playology dog toys are built to withstand chewing, they can serve as a durable alternative for active cats that love to chew. Plush and crinkle toys from the dog range are particularly well suited for cats.
When selecting a dog toy for a cat, ensure the toy is an appropriate size for the cat to play with safely.
No Playology cat toy is completely indestructible, and supervision is recommended during play regardless of toy type.
For cats that play aggressively, teaser toys such as the Spider Teaser and Jellyfish Teaser are built to withstand active use. The Centipede and Lizards with Bugs kicking toys are also a strong durability option, as both are made from rubber material.
Playology cat toys are designed primarily for kicking, pouncing, chasing, and kitten play rather than chewing. Many cat toys include components such as feathers or ribbons that can become a choking hazard if chewed, so supervision is recommended during play.
For cats that enjoy mouthing and biting, the Crawfish is a good suitable option. It is catnip-infused with a crunchy internal texture designed to mimic real anatomy for cats that like to mouth and bite their catch.
For a wider range of chew-friendly cat toys made from recycled materials, Playology's sister brand Grrreen offers additional options. Grrreen can be accessed through the brand navigation menu in the top left corner of playologypets.com or purchased on Amazon.com or Chewy.com.
Playology offers replacement parts for select cat toys. One commonly replaced part is the Suction Cup Spring Bird replacement bird, which is listed on playologypets.com under cat products.
Not all toys have available replacement parts, and some may need to be replaced entirely depending on the product. For inquiries about a specific replacement part not listed on the website, contact Playology customer support at karen@playologypets.com.
